Chapter 11

Stephen took slow, hesitant steps toward the rock pile. He moved along its side until he came to where the cowboy boot lay in the dirt. He stopped and took several deep breaths before going any closer. He took one last breath and stepped forward. There, lying up against the rocks, was his father’s body. Luckily, his father’s cowboy hat had fallen from his head and it covered his face. Hot, stinging tears welled up in Stephen’s eyes. He kneeled by this father and grabbed his cold hand.

“Pop, I can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve ever done for me,” Stephen said, choking back tears. “You are my hero and you always have been.”
